Convection has been building over the past few hours as Tropical Storm Irene passed the Virgin Islands. Top winds are now 70 mph and the central pressure is own to 993 mb.
Irene will move across Puerto Rico tonight and early in the morning, slowly picking up steam as it goes. It will likely briefly become a hurricane Monday morning as it crosses the Mona passage between Puerto Rico and the Hispaniola. It will cross the northern part of the Dominican Republic Monday afternoon and Monday night. Weakening slightly as it goes. It should emerge over the open water Tuesday morning and turn more northwestward, crossing between Cuba and the southern Bahamas.
It should become a hurricane again early on Wednesday. It will pass near Grand Bahama Wednesday night and be near the South Florida coast early Thursday. By Friday morning, it should be passing just east of St. Augustine and it could be near Charleston or Savannah by Saturday morning. A track paralleling the coast could lead to intensification and I fear it could be a major hurricane by the time it reaches the Georgia/South Carolina coast.
There is very good consensus among the various models on this solution that takes Irene just off the East Coast of Florida. There is still an outlier that carries the storm into the eastern Gulf of Mexico, but that does not look very possible. Stranger things have happened, but for now, it does not look like a threat at this time. |
